Air-Conditioning in Refuge Chambers

In underground mining emergencies, refuge chambers are designed to provide a temporary safe haven when workers cannot immediately evacuate. While many people associate air conditioning with comfort, in this environment it becomes a critical life-support system. When occupants are sealed inside a refuge chamber, the heat generated by their bodies and the moisture from breathing quickly increase both temperature and humidity. Without proper environmental control, these conditions can rapidly escalate into dangerous heat stress. Air conditioning systems therefore play a vital role in maintaining survivable conditions by regulating both temperature and humidity for the duration of chamber occupancy.

AGM vs Lithium Batteries in Refuge Chambers

Let’s break down the key differences between AGM and lithium-ion systems and explain why AGM remains the most dependable and safest solution for refuge chamber UPS applications today.

Extended Emergency Breathing Protection for Komoto Copper Company (KCC)

Kamoto Copper Company (KCC), a major copper and cobalt producer in the DRC, partnered with MineARC Systems to extend emergency breathing protection for miners in remote underground zones, where evacuation distances exceeded 750 metres. The result? KCC’s workforce transitioned from 25-minute self-rescuers to the 60-minute DEZEGA CARBO 60, supported by full on-site training and French-language resources. The CARBO 60s more than doubled breathing duration while being lighter and more comfortable to carry.
